Should I Build or Buy?

Trying to decide between buying and building is sometimes a difficult thing to do. It really all comes down to personal preference. At the end of the day, what do you want to call home? Some people fear that building a home costs too much or takes too long but the costs can add up very fast on an existing home. Not to mention the time it can take to find a home that may suit your needs and desires.

Here are just some things to consider about the cost factor:
  • Is the kitchen large enough to suit your needs or will it need updated?
  • How many rooms will need repainting or new wallpaper?
  • Does the carpeting need to be replaced or floors refinished?
  • Are there enough bathrooms or do you need to upgrade the existing one(s)?
  • How old is the heating system? Will you need to consider installing a more efficient system in the future or replace it due to age?
  • What is the insulation factor of the home? Will it cost you more to heat or cool?
  • How old is the roof? How long before it will need replaced?
  • How old are the other mechanical systems?
Most existing homes will need an average of $15,000 to $25,000 in repair or replacement costs alone in the first 5 years of ownership. So remember to consider the cost of renovations, remodeling and repairs. When these costs are added onto the price of an existing house, it can easily cost as much as a custom built home which is designed with your lifestyle and needs in mind.
