Log/Timber-Frame Home Information

This resources provides comprehensive information about Log/Timber-Frame homes, including:

What Is a Log Home?
Today's log home is not what is used to be. Not only are the engineering and quality better, but many people are surprised by the variety of choices. When asked, most people will describe a log home to look much like the log homes built in the "old frontier." While some folks will look to build a home with this type of rustic appeal, there are many styles available that bring a very contemporary look to log home living.

To keep it simple, a log home still uses some basic principles. The home is constructed from larger logs or timbers that are stacked one on top of the other to form walls. The look and appeal is one that is more natural than that of today's 2×6 stick-built construction.

Instead of applying brick, vinyl siding or any other exterior covering, the logs are left exposed and a preservative is applied to maintain the logs' integrity. Many types of roofing options are available, but metal, asphalt shingle and shake are the most common. And as with stick-built homes, any types of windows or doors can be used to accommodate individual tastes. The interior of the home can be finished like a stick built home, or the owner may opt for the rustic look and leave the logs exposed.

With all of today's choices, it may be hard to determine where to begin if you are interested in building a log home of your own. Choosing between milled or handcrafted logs could be the starting point. The species of wood used could be the place to begin as well, but what does all of this mean? We've compiled some of the more important choices and their options to assist you with this process:

What Is a Timber-Frame Home?
Timber-Frame homes are similar to Stick-Frame homes in that they're constructed of an exposed inner network of timber, but their network becomes an integral part of the home's structure, appearance and design.

Most Timber-Frame homes bear a resemblance to Log Homes after completion, and offer the same rural/rustic feel and spacious living areas. As with Log Homes, many lenders balk and financing these homes because of their unusual requirements.

As with Log Homes, these unique requirements are not a problem with Construction Advisors, Construction Lending Division; we've financed hundreds of custom Timber-Frame homes, and we know how to turn these unique dream homes into reality..
